What is Turf Toe?
- A sprain of the first MTP (big toe joint)
- In a more serious injury, tearing of the plantar plate or collateral ligaments can occur
- In most severe cases:
- the capsule can tear off of the metatarsal head
- a fracture can occur
- the big toe can dislocate
How does Turf Toe happen?
- Turf toe occurs during a sport or activity where the front of the foot is planted on the ground, the heel is off the ground, and the big toe is forced into hyper-extension.
- Often occurs in athletes
- Football players
- If they are tackled while landing from a jump or another player lands on the back of their heel
- Soccer players
- Normally injure toe on the non-kicking leg when the foot is planted on the ground
- Other sports that include frequent starting, stopping, cutting, and changing directions
- Football players
Symptoms of Turf Toe:
- Swollen big toe
- Stiff big toe
- Joint tenderness
- Pain when pushing off while walking
- History of injury to big toe
- Possible instability of big toe
